Why the selection matters
Belt-driven and ball-screw linear modules are the two most common linear motion units in automated equipment. Choosing the wrong type often leads to performance shortfalls, rework, and delayed machine delivery. This guide helps you decide at the design stage based on five key parameters.
1. Speed and stroke: the biggest differentiator
Belt-driven modules reach linear speeds of 3-5 m/s and strokes above 3 meters, making them ideal for high-speed transfer and long-travel reciprocating motion. Ball-screw modules are limited by the screw's critical speed: typically 0.5-1.5 m/s, and strokes beyond 1.5 m risk vibration and deflection.
Rule of thumb: above 1.5 m/s or 1.5 m stroke, choose belt-driven; for short-stroke, low-speed, high-precision positions, choose ball-screw.
2. Positioning accuracy: the screw's inherent advantage
Ball-screw modules achieve repeatability of ±0.01-0.02 mm, improvable with linear encoders. Belt-driven modules typically land at ±0.05-0.1 mm due to belt tooth pitch and elastic elongation. Precision dispensing, alignment, and inspection stations should use ball-screw modules.
3. Load and rigidity: check direction and moment
Load capacity depends mostly on the linear guide and frame rigidity, not the drive element. Ball-screw modules offer high axial thrust for pressing and fastening; belt-driven modules suit medium loads with fast movement. Always verify allowable moment and cantilever load — these are the most common causes of field failure.
4. Service life and maintenance cost
Timing belts are consumables with a 10,000-20,000 hour life and are cheap and easy to replace. Ball screws last longer (theoretically 30,000-50,000 km) but cost far more to replace. In dusty environments, prefer fully enclosed screw modules; belt modules tolerate dust better.
